Traralgon came away winners for the 14th time in 15 years at the Victorian Country Swimming Championships held in Wodonga. In a stunning victory, Traralgon beat closest rival, Geelong, by 1867 points. (Full point scores below.) It was a wonderful team effort from coaches, swimmers and parents to produce some outstanding results.
Congratulations to Georgia Tsebelis who won the ‘Swimmer of the Meet’ for the highest points score by any swimmer, male or female. Georgia won on the last individual swim of the day from a strong field which included National Age champion, Isaac Jones, who was only 2 points behind. Georgia competed in all 14 individual events (heats and finals) and 4 relays over the 3 day program winning 7 gold medals! A well deserved result for a super effort.
Alex Tsebelis won the Rob Godfrey Award for the highest point score for a swimmer 13 and under in 13/U events. Alex won all 5 13/U individual events.
An Australia Day medal for the individual swim netting the highest FINA points score on Australia Day went to Mikaela Cornelissen. Locke DeGaris and Lauren Akers brought home the ASCTA Country Swimmer awards for potential.
Traralgon team also won the Australia Day trophy for highest point score on Australia Day.
It was great to introduce so many young swimmers to the thrills of ‘Countries’. We surely hope that they will continue to love the experience for many years as our many 18/O swimmers who return do! It was wonderful to have Jeremy Meyer, Sam and Scott Ashby, Matt and Jess Norwood, Kirsten and Alice Lieshout, Courtney and Brenton Ford, Elliot Shaw, Cameron Juha, Sven Eriksson, Stephanie Spehar, Zoe Trembath, Brayden Waltham, Shae Haney, Nicole Moon and Lily Collins return to support the 2014 Country Campaign and greatly add to the fun and team spirit.
Thank you to our coaches who worked so hard all weekend to challenge, encourage, inspire and motivate our swimmers and for all their hard work leading up to the Championships to ensure swimmers were well prepared. Thank you to Veronica Roberts and Sam Fenton who kept the swimmers going with well planned and monitored ‘cool downs’ and therapeutic massage. Thank you to the parents and siblings who worked as One Team to set up, tear down, tow, and organise to ensure all went smoothly. Special thanks to the Haneys and Helen Trickett for their efforts – AND to our band of photographers whose efforts we will soon share (Wayne Moon, Michael Mihaly, Steven Spehar and Sue Juha). But mostly, thank you to our 87 fabulous swimmers from 9 – 48, who gave us much reason to cheer and to be so very proud.
