What a fantastic Victorian Country Championships! The event which a couple of months ago looked like it may never be swum was held in fabulous weather over 3 days at Warragul. Here is our top 10 takeaways from the meet.
1. The Club was successful in winning its 21st Countries in 22 years accumulating 2,233 points followed by Geelong on 2,011 and Ballarat Gold with 1,367.
2. The Boys won their trophy for the 18th time from Geelong however the result was reversed with the Girls just pipped by 14 points. We congratulate Geelong on their success here.
3: We won the Australia Day Trophy for the Club getting the most points on the final day which this year was Relays Only. Our teams accumulated 500 points, just getting over the line in the last event of the day with Geelong on 494 – a mighty effort by both teams.
4. Individually our swimmers won 18 gold, 17 silver and 14 bronze medals with Relays picking up 7 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze.
5. Club President Jane Mitchell won the Herb Jeffrey award for services to Country swimming. Her 27 year tenure as President and committee member of our great Club, administrator, coach, team manager and so on is unsurpassed and she is indeed a worthy winner of this award.
6. The coaches – Dean Gooch, Cam Juha, Trent Morrow, Sam Fenton, Audrey Lee and Carissa Hughes – were exceptional not only at the meet but particularly in the months leading up to the event. A great reward for an outstanding and committed group of people.
7. The parental support was again incredible. From team management to setting up to transport to sponsorship and most important of all the commitment to our swimmers is amazing. Thank you.
8. The swimmers – what can we say! From those who swam 1 event to 20, those from age 10 to our oldest at 38, those who lived round the corner of pool to those who came from far away, getting the “band” back together for this meet is so much fun for all involved. Congratulations on the victory.
9. From outside the Club we thank the greatest Country District, Gippsland Swimming for its commitment to hold this event. Where others pulled out the determination, dedication and resolve of those people involved in the sport of swimming in Gippsland is epic.
10. Finally, the Cub is proud to be part of the greatest team sport of all. It is a sport which teaches our young the life skills needed to develop and grow and we always strive to always include each and every swimmer and parent in our journey. The 2021 Victorian Country Championships was our greatest win ever. Congratulations Team Traralgon.
